Alltel Wireless has announced the launch of the Samsung Gem mid-range Android smartphone. Back then, the Gem was an ideal candidate to occupy the low spot on the Android totem pole that was previously occupied by the HTC Eris.
The Gem is an Android 2.1 device that features a 3.2-inch touchscreen display, 800MHz processor, 3.2 megapixel camera (complete with a Superman-logoish bezel), Wi-Fi (with hotspot capabilities), Bluetooth, GPS, micro-SD card slot (support for up to a 16GB card), and 124MB of on-board memory.
The phone will be sold by the now regional carrier for $49.99 before an additional $50 mail-in rebate bringing the total to free.
