You may already know that the first commercial Firefox OS based phone is launching today in Spain. But we have something else to share. It is about a Firefox OS tablet.
Mozilla CTO Brendan Eich said that a Firefox OS-based tablet PC is coming soon. However, he hasn’t spilled the bean when it might come. In a news conference in San Francisco on Monday Eich said, “I’m not going to project when, but I’m going to say we’re moving aggressively and you’ll see things soon.”
He also revealed that a Firefox OS-based tablet PC was the first thing Mozilla was thinking about. But inbound developer feedbacks were mostly in support of a Firefox smartphone, which led the organization to change its track. “But we’re going to get to tablets ASAP,” Eich reiterated.
In fact, prototype of a Firefox tablet has already been displayed by Foxconn, the company which manufactures iPhone and iPad for Apple. At last month’s Computex fair in Taipei Foxconn showcased a Firefox OS-based tablet.
Foxconn is also planning to invest heavily behind Firefox OS. The plans include hiring 2,000-3,000 engineers to develop HTML5 and cloud software for products based on Firefox OS.
