The 7-inch Surface will go into mass production later this year, according to the Wall Street Journal. Microsoft has also decided to cut prices of Windows and Office software to boost the sles of lower-cost touchscreen devices running Windows 8.

The report also confirms, citing component suppliers, Microsoft is testing a smartphone of its own. However, it is not clear whether the company will actually bring such a device to market.

Microsoft started shipping Surface RT tablet in October last year. Surface Pro joined the race a couple of months later. But, sales of either one of the models have not been encouraging. It is a thing to see, whether a 7-inch Surface can bring success to Microsoft or not.
