USB connectors have significantly evolved since the nifty device first made its debut. USB 3.0 Promoter Group has now revealed that the next-gen Type-C USB connector is in the works and that it packs a slim and reversible design.
The connectors in Type-C have been trimmed down in size because this, in turn, would allow manufacturers to create slimmer USBs. It will also help mitigate power consumption and enable speedy data transfer. The new design of the Type-C connector is a lot like the current Micro-B USB 2.0 design.
Moreover, the upcoming connector’s design includes support for scalable power charging. For those of us who often rely on USB connections to charge up a device, this is a huge plus. Another very significant feature of the new design is that it is reversible – meaning, you can plug in a USB device either way and it will connect. No longer will you need to find the right orientation of the nifty gadget before plugging it in, a torture most of us have gone through.
Commenting on the upcoming Type-C USB connector design, USB 3.0 Promoter Group Chairman Brad Saunders stated, “While USB technology is well established as the favored choice for connecting and powering devices, we recognize the need to develop a new connector to meet evolving design trends in terms of size and usability. The new Type-C connector will fit well with the market’s direction and affords an opportunity to lay a foundation for future versions of USB.”
