[Tutorial] How To Create Shortcut To Shutdown And Restart In Windows 7

Windows 7 has much improved with respect to the Shutdown and Restart button designs but the one thing that didn’t changed are there locations, they both still sitting there in start menu. How about making those two buttons which we use many times during a day more accessible by creating an icon on the desktop and by double clicking on any of those two icons we will Shutdown or Restart our computer? Sounds interesting? Then read this tutorial to find out how to make those icons.


To create Shutdown to Restart icons and place those on your desktop follow below steps:

Shutdown Shortcut

Step 1: Right click with your mouse on empty desktop space

Step 2: From context menu choose New -> Shortcut

Step 3: Inside new window type following text shutdown.exe -s -t 01 and Click Next

Step 4: Now type a name for your shortcut e.g. Shutdown and click Finish

Step 5: Now right click on newly created Shutdown icon and Choose Properties -> Change Icon -> Choose appropriate button for your Shutdown icon

Restart Shortcut

Step 1: Right click with your mouse on empty desktop space

Step 2: From context menu choose New -> Shortcut

Step 3: Inside new window type following text shutdown.exe -r -t 01 and Click Next

Step 4: Now type a name for your shortcut e.g. Restart and click Finish

Step 5: Now right click on newly created Restart icon and Choose Properties -> Change Icon -> Choose appropriate button for your Restart icon

At the end as you can see from the image below you should be having two new icons on your desktop Shutdown and Restart.

    There is a freeware program called TOOLER that creates the shortcuts for this plus a heck of a lot more.Works for Win 7/Vista/XP.Handy as hell.Ever time I set up a Windows machine,this tool is a must.Just do a search.
