Angry Viewers Protest Over NBC Olympics Coverage Through Social Media

Before Olympics Games 2012 kicked off, NBC was being hailed as one of the channels who will be extensively covering the event. However, as soon as the event started, we all realized that NBC wasn’t going to cover the even live – rather it is tape-delaying a lot of events. While that in itself angered the viewers, NBC committed yet another blunder.

The match between Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte for the 400-meter showdown was highly anticipated by viewers around the globe. As usual, NBC didn’t broadcast it live and chose to delay it by a few hours. Things got bad when NBC aired the news of Phelps’ defeat on its ‘NBC Nightly News’ before it had even aired the match!

This immediately attracted heat from the fans who were already quite angry over NBC’s Olympics coverage. Within no time, #NBCsucks hashtag started to trend on Twitter. Jim Bell, from NBC, was taken to task on Twitter where he responded to the tweets of angry fans and tried to placate them. He said that from now on, he’ll try to ensure that if any spoilers are going to be on the screen, there is a warning accompanying them.

But the furore over the whole issue has continued and other hashtags, including #NBCfail have been trending on Twitter. In fact, a  parody account named @NBCDelayed has been created to further jest NBC’s abysmal coverage. The account already has gathered more than 1300 followers within first hour!
