Over the past few months, Tumblr has been stuck in a dilemma – one section of users want the ever-increasing porn on the platform banned for good, the other half is rooting for the freedom of speech argument. Notwithstanding, the company has now launched an initiative which, for now, aims to make porn hard to access on Tumblr.
The initiative doesn’t come with any radical changes. Rather, it comprises of few minor changes which may still have a significant impact. For instance, the company is trying to shut out the porn-related Tumblr pages from the search results.
Starting from now, when searching for something on Tumblr, your search results wouldn’t include any such pages which are deemed as NSFW or Adult. This is not the case if you are logged in and the ‘Safe Mode’ is not on, in which case you get the normal search results, including all the explicit pages.
If you are not logged in, Tumblr would automatically filter out these porn-related search results. Far more substantial changes have hit the mobile app of the platform. Any Tumblr search results on the app wouldn’t include NSFW of Adult pages while if you using tags to look for content, there are certain tags that don’t even work any more.
The Tumblr team hasn’t made any mention of these changes, so we are gauging that they are only a prelude to more porn-filtering changes that may be rolled out soon. Either way, a far more convenient method for the Tumblr team would be to simply make all NSFW or Adult pages opt-in only.
