When a video is watched in YouTube, +1 is added to its counting. Until now, YouTube had a system of showing a maximum view of 2,147,483,647 and after that even that video was viewed no mater how many times, the system was’t able to add any counting. And the buzzing news is that Psy’s Gangnam Style video is the very first video which has broken that YouTube’s view counter and for which YouTube has to upgrade its view counting.
PSY released the ‘Gangnam Style’ song in 2012. At then he had no idea that this very song would turn him into a superstar. People from all over the world started dancing the way PSY did in the song’s video. Gangnam Style is the very first YouTube video song that reached 1 billion and broke all the records in terms of view counting. In March of this year, the video hit a view of 2 billion milestone.
On the other hand, YouTube built their system in 32-bit system. It means it was able to show a maximum view of 2,147,483,647. To programmers, this value is known as INT_MAX (for 32-bit). And after that number 2,147,483,647, even a video is viewed no mater how many times, the system was’t able to add any counting; instead it was designed to show an “error.”
So when YouTube saw that the Gangnam Style video counting was increasing sharply, it had no other option except from changing their system from 32-bit to 64-bit. Note that 32-bit means a maximum number of 2,147,483,647 can be shown, while 64-bit means a maximum number of 9,223,372,036,854,775,808 which is 9 quintillion can be shown.
YouTube has said, “We never thought a video would be watched in numbers greater than a 32-bit integer (=2,147,483,647 views), but that was before we met PSY. “Gangnam Style” has been viewed so many times we had to upgrade to a 64-bit integer (9,223,372,036,854,775,808)!”
Doesn’t matter whether you have or haven’t seen the Gangnam Style video, lets see it one more time, what do you say? After all, Gangnam Style is the video that forced YouTube to upgrade its view counter!
