Every digital device maintains basic rules of logic gates (idealized or physical device to implement Boolean functions). But, only people working in related fields have the chance to know them by heart. It can be assured that an average Joe or David have little chance to know about logic gates. That is, on average 99% of huamn beings might not even know about the concepts of logic gates which powers the digital world. Seems, crabs have beaten human beings on the knowledge of logic gates. A recent study shows that crabs don’t only know them, they live them! A group of Japanese researchers at Kobe University found that swarms of crabs exactly follow the logic gate model like AND, OR and NOT gate. How implausible it may seem, it’s true!
Yukio-Pegio GUNJI, Professor of KOBE University and his colleagues understand that when two swarms of crabs collide, they merge together and continue in a direction that is the sum of their velocities. That means the researchers could accommodate a previous model of anomalistic computing which based on colliding billiard balls, where the unconventional computing could do work with swarms of crabs that indicates with 0s and 1s represented by the absence or presence of a swarm.
According to the Newscientist – They first tried the idea with simulated crab swarms. The OR gate, which simply combines one or two crab swarms into one, worked every time, but the more complicated AND gate, which involves the combined swarm heading down one of three paths, was less reliable.
They then tried the logic gates for real, using swarms of 40 crabs. The crab swarms were placed at the entrances of the logic gates and encouraged to move by a looming shadow that fooled them into thinking a predatory bird was overhead. The results closely matched the simulation, suggesting that crab-powered computers could indeed be possible.
