Nortel Networks announced that it had sold its juggernaut patent portfolio to a consortium made up of the likes of Apple, Microsoft, and RIM for a hefty sum of $4.5 billion cash and Sony, Ericsson, and EMC will now have access to more than 6,000 patents that relate to all manner of technologies, including 4G LTE wireless capabilities, Wi-Fi, semiconductors, and social networking. Each company in the consortium could have paid $750 million each, significantly less than Google’s original $900 million bid and it is not clear if each company contributed equally or will equally share in ownership of the patents in question………….

Sony has introduced a new VAIO Z laptop in Europe to rival Apple’s MacBook Air slenderness and this new carbon fiber laptop is not only thinner and lighter than the Air, but also packs a punch in the specs department. Sony’s ultraslim 13-inch VAIO Z laptop packs external GPU for power on demand and it features only Intel’s HD Graphics 3000 solution but the VAIO Z beats other ultralights with its Power Media Dock, which contributes the power of an AMD Radeon 6650M GPU with 1GB of dedicated memory. The pricing starts at £1,434 ($2,294) with a Core i5 CPU, 4GB of RAM and no PMD ; the dock is a £400 ($640) option with no optical drive included, while upgrading to a 1080p 13.1-inch LCD is a mere £40 extra………..
Sony is facing a class-action lawsuit which accuses the company of negligence and lax security, the suit cites many confidential witnesses who claim that Sony’s security was far from adequate and very open to attack. This lawsuit filed alleges that Sony laid off a number of employees responsible for network security a few weeks before the PlayStation Network went down…………
Sony Ericsson will be implementing NXP’s NXP PN65 NFC solution for its upcoming Android-based handhelds intended for featuring mobile payments support, include a radio controller, the typical NFC software and embedded security measures such as advanced cryptography. NFC chips will allow Sony Ericsson phones with the right SIM to use the new mobile payments systems, such as planned in the UK for launch later this year…………
Sony has posted a teaser video for its upcoming 9.4in Android tablet the S1 and it ocusing instead on creating a buzz around the device through snappy visuals and a seemingly single-take spectacle. Sony has released a new streaming music app for Google Android smartphones, called Music Unlimited and it’s powered by the company’s Qriocity streaming music service, is available as a free download from the Android Market, but you’ll need to sign up for a monthly subscription plan to actually stream any music. Sony is offering free 30-day trials, but if you forget to cancel by the end of the month you could find $3.99 to $9.99 on your bill and the lower priced service allows you to tune into ad-free streaming music channels sorted by genre, era, or mood……….
