The report says that by 2017 there would be 6.6 billion mobile phones in use. Together with the number of tablets in use, the total number of mobile devices would exceed the world’s population.

Analysts predict that global shipment of smart mobile devices will reach 2.1 billion between 2012 and 2017. Till 2015, the growth will be led by Americans and Western Europeans. After that, the growth will be fueled by emerging markets.

CCS Insight expects that on 2013 approximately 1.86 billion mobile phones will be shipped. The number of smartphones will be  983 million on this year.

With this growth, CCS Insight expects to see competition on the mobile OS side. Marina Koytcheva, director of forecasting at CCS Insight, asked not to “forget new upstarts like Tizen, Firefox OS, Sailfish OS, Baidu Yi and Aliyun, which are all hustling to grab a share of this lucrative market.”
