Volunteers Can Now Map The World With Google Street View Backpacks

Google Maps is currently the undisputed champion in the arena of online mapping solutions. The company has been ramping up its Maps by integrating it with Street View. To further speed up the process, Google is now calling volunteers to apply for its Trekker backpack cam and contribute to Street View.

The company has specifically asked any tourism boards, non-profit organizations, universities and research organizations that they are welcome to apply and get Trekker backpack cams if they can help the company in getting Street View data of places which are relatively remote.

The Trekker backpack that the company is offering comes equipped with highly advanced tools. It includes a camera system on top and lets you gather images of excellent quality while on the move. The backpack is meant for such individuals who go to remote places on foot, places where cars and other vehicles can’t usually go.

In all, the Trekker includes 15 lenses all of which are angled in different directions so that you are able to gather the maximum details in a given location. These different images, taken every 2.5 seconds are then stitched together into a neat 360-view panoramic view.

Even if you hail from a third-party that can go to hard-to-access places, you can apply for the Trekker backpack and then go on trekking to these regions, helping Google along the way. For individuals who typically have a fondness for traveling on foot, this is a great opportunity to couple their passion for traveling with Street View.
