Google Processes RIAA’s 25 Millionth Takedown Request

RIAA has been among the leading entities when it comes to sending DMCA notices to Google. Apparently, RIAA has been sending out millions of URLs to the search giant, to have them removed from search results. By now, the organization has sent more than 25 million URLs to Google.

RIAA

With each passing day, the number of URLs being sent out by RIAA are increasing, putting a lot of pressure on Google to deal with them. For instance, it took RIAA nearly a year to send out a total of 20 million URLs it wanted to have removed from search results.

Over the past six weeks, the organization has sent out another 5 million URLs, which shows that the volume has significantly increased. The new figures put RIAA in the third place behind BPI and Degban, in terms of the total number of URLs sent to Google.

The big question is, will such a flawed strategy achieve anything? DMCA notices sent to Google simply help in removing the URLs in question from search results. However, the URLs themselves and the content on them continues to exist. Since Google wouldn’t display these URLs any more, pirates have started relying on multiple links, which essentially point to the source of the content.

In other words, where there was once a single link to a page containing pirated content, now there are many. Google may filter out one or two of them, due to the DMCA notices, but the content will become available yet again through a different link. So RIAA may continue actively monitoring the internet and sending millions of URLs to Google every quarter, but that won’t help much.
