XBMC (Xbox Media Center) is an excellent, well-reputed and free open-source cross-platform media player. The software is quite popular among the open-source community and is widely used. The developer team of XBMC has now expanded its horizon further. The team has now extended its support for the Android platform. And, it is a full featured version of XBMC for Android.
According to an official blog post from the team, this is not going to be a trimmed down version with deleted features. Rather, it is going to be a fairly complete translation of the software to the Android platform.
Also, Android users would not require any jailbreak or rooting of their devices. Users can directly run the player as an app for a whole host of Android devices including tablets, phones, set-top-box and others.
The plans for an Android version of the software were chiefly triggered because of the fact that a number of Android-based set-top-boxes have launched and a lot more are in the pipeline. So, to expand its reach to this fairly sized audience, the XBMC team decided to launch an Android version.
According to the post, “There are still many details left to iron out, mainly related to the wide variety of Android devices in the wild. We have not yet decided what minimum requirements will be set, due simply to the lack of extensive testing on exotic devices. As for taking advantage of Android itself, we haven’t even scratched the surface. There are so many interesting features that we could take advantage of: launching apps, location awareness, speech recognition, on and on. Once the core port is finished up, you can bet we’ll be exploring many new avenues.”
The XBMC team has released the source code in github. The team has decided not to publish the app in Google Play until they “are satisfied that users with all kinds of devices get the same great XBMC experience.”
