Source Code of Android 4.0 Is Now Available

The source code of the latest version of Android OS, the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is now available. The announcement was made by Android Open-Source Project. This means that the developers can now use this OS source code.

The source code that has been released is actually of Android 4.0.1. Android 4.0.1 is the exact OS that will be running on Galaxy Nexus.

Prominent features of Android 4.0.1:
The new OS includes functionality for a number of new things. These include facial recognition with the help of which the home screen can be unlocked. However, it has been demonstrated earlier that the facial recognition unlock feature is still not fool-proof and the Android developers may be working further on it to improve it. Another major improvement is the revamping of User Interface, a change that makes the new OS look much more user-friendly and fresher than the earlier version. Other new things featured in this version of the OS are screenshots and a better look for the folders.

With the release of the source code, the developers can now create their own ROMs and customized, fully functional system images for the new Android phones.

The code has been made available for anyone to download. However, since it’s a huge project that has been made open-source, it may still take some time for all components of the source code to be available for download. If you attempt to download it, you should make sure that you get the complete copy of the code. According to the official statement released about this, the build components for devices other than Galaxy Nexus will also be made available soon.
