There was once a time when if you wanted to go to a new place, you required a map, a detailed informational book about the locality and other details about it. Thanks to Google Maps, we no longer need the regular maps. And now, thanks to a yet another Google app called ‘Field Trip’, you wouldn’t need to have an encyclopedia either.
This new app from Google is literally an encyclopaedia on the go. It is an automated guide that keeps you informed with details of the locality you are in. For instance, if you walking down a popular lane in, say, Venice, the app will keep pushing notifications to your smartphone regarding the buildings, restaurants and other notable places in the region.
According to the app, “When you get close to something interesting, [the app] pops up a card with details about the location. No click is required. If you have a headset or bluetooth connected, it can even read the info to you.” Moreover, if you are annoyed with too many notifications, there’s a way to handle that too.
You can specify the kind of information you need, for instance about ‘architecture’ or ‘local cuisine’ and the app will provide you these specific details only. There are two modes in which you can run Field Trip: ‘Feeling lucky’ in which you receive only the important notifications from the app, and ‘Explore’ mode in which you are pinged about every tiny detail about the locality.
According to the vice president of product at Google, John Hanke, “The idea behind the app was to build something that would help people connect with the real, physical world around them.” Truly the sheer amount of information dished out by this app is incredible. In a way, this app is your all-in-one solution whenever you are travelling to newer places.
Currently, the app is available only for Android but Google promises that an iPhone version is coming soon. You can download the app for Android from Google Play Store.
