Pilots Can Easily Avoid Severe Weather With New Radar Tech

Weather conditions are a huge nuisance for pilots who often have to avoid them and change their routes in doing so. Numerous systems have been developed to help pilots avoid bad weather conditions. But Honeywell’s IntuVue is a huge step ahead of all of them.

The mainstream strategy that the pilots use when they face a severe weather is to simply avoid it and route the plane by circumventing it. However, the problem with this is that not only does it cost billions in extra fuel expenses, it also delays the flight and make the passengers impatient and unsatisfied.

Until now, pilots have been using software which could tell them of any bad weather conditions ahead. In fact, Honeywell’s IntuVue system enabled the pilots to see up to 370 miles ahead of them up to an altitude of 60,000 feet. When Honeywell introduced this system in 2008, it was considered far superior to other available solutions.

Now, the company has unveiled the latest iteration of IntuVue which is even more advanced. Not only does it provides the exact weather conditions up to hundreds of miles ahead, it can also provide the exact location of rain, hail and turbulence within a pocket of bad weather. This can essentially enable a pilot to steer right through bad weather by avoiding all these conditions.

The new iteration can help the airlines save billions of dollars and also help the flights being timely despite adverse weather conditions. It has already been certified for Boeing 737-NG and the company is seeking to have it certified for a number of other planes.
