Developers have been clamouring for new JavaScript benchmarks for long, as the web has evolved and changed significantly over time. Google has finally decided to heed the plea and has rolled out Octane, a new JavaScript benchmarking suite.
The new suite that Google has unveiled contains tools which are aimed at bolstering the performance of JavaScript in modern web browsers. The Octane benchmark essentially gauges the performance of web browsers when they run complex and interactive web applications.
According to Google’s blog about the release, “Most of the existing JavaScript benchmarks run artificial tests that were created on an ad-hoc basis to stress a specific JavaScript feature. Octane breaks with this tradition and extends the former V8 Benchmark Suite with five new benchmarks created from full, unaltered, well-known web applications and libraries.”
A number of JavaScript benchmarks are already available but they were developed in the days when JavaScript hadn’t grown so important. But given its increasingly greater significance in the world of web, Google’s release is very timely.
The new tests which are incorporated in the Octane suite include Mandreel, GB Emulator, Code Load, Box2DWeB and Pdf.js. Google promises that if a browser scores high on these tests, this would essentially translate to a smooth and better experience when running complex web applications.
Another important thing about the suite is that it has a rather impressive user-interface, making it visually dynamic and appealing. The UI works perfectly well with mobile devices too so that it can also be run on different mobile browsers.
