Microsoft has launched the beta version of its social networking platform named So.Cl. The company believes that this platform can give students a new way to learn. This site is designed by Microsoft’s FUSE Labs. By using So.cl, students can share useful information quickly, and build their own pages. Students can collect information from both inside and outside the classroom. Microsoft has been testing this site in selected universities since last year.
By using So.cl network, students can extend their educational experience. They are able to build posts with many elements such as photos, video, text, and more. So.cl let people to find friends who share similar interests and students can build communities around specific educational goals.
The project is not a rival of Facebook or a rip-off of Twitter. For logging, you require either a Facebook or Windows Live account. So.cl has been made for students in information and design schools at the University of Washington, Syracuse University, and New York University.
So.Cl states in its FAQ:
“We expect students to continue using products such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and other existing social networks, as well as Bing, Google and other search tools.
We hope to encourage students to reimagine how our everyday communication and learning tools can be improved, by researching, learning and sharing in their everyday lives.”
Lili Cheng, general manager of FUSE Labs said “What we’ve seen in the last year or two is innovation in the way schools are teaching and learning from students, creating new programs to study how information spreads, motivates learning, and creates expertise.” She also added “A hugely popular freshman course in some schools is Social Media 101, which often leads to a project-based innovation course where students build and deploy their ideas.”
