Imagine going to a new and budding social network only to find that it has no activity and there are only a few dozen users who post only once in a while. Naturally, you would navigate away without joining. The founders of Reddit probably considered this when they initially launched the website. And they had a fine solution to counter this.
This has now been revealed by the co-founder of Reddbit, Steve Huffman. According to him, he and his fellow cofounder Alexis Ohanian made loads of fake user accounts. These accounts were then used by the two to populate content onto the website.
According to him, “You would go to Reddit in the early days, the first couple of months and there’d be tons of… fake users.” However, what the two of them did maintain was that even through these fake accounts, the would submit high-quality content on the website. They would post precisely the kind of articles that would genuinely interest them.
As a result, this pretty much ‘set the tone’ for the website and new users started loading interesting content to the website. At the same time, this saved Reddit from looking like an abandoned town in its early days.
However, that can’t be called a sure-shot recipe for success. Reddit has got its shot at immense fame and success with 35 million unique visitors simply because it was a creative idea. Huffman and Ohanian only worked their best to bring it to the world’s eyes. Huffman pretty much sums it in the following words, “Social websites require a little bit of magic to work.”
