Tumblr Launches ‘Sponsor Products’ To Make Some Money

Tumblr has become one of the most wildly popular blogging platforms on the web. People are increasing flocking to it and it currently boasts a whooping 54 million-strong user base. For long, Tumblr has remained rather profitless, concentrating more on providing an excellent blogging experience. Now, however, it seems that the time to make some money has finally arrived.

Tumblr has now announced what it calls ‘Sponsor Products.’ Essentially, yes, they are simply ads which have been paid for. This is the first time the blogging platform has launched a paid set of sponsors. It first announced about introducing these ads at Ad Age’s Digital Conference.’

However, Tumblr has plans of keeping the ads out of user’s way as much as possible. The initial roll-out of the ads will happen at two important Tumblr features – ‘Radar’ and ‘Spotligjt.’ And the company can easily pull off sponsor ads by showcasing them only through these two features. As the company’s post reads, ‘With more than 120 million daily impressions, Tumblr Radar showcases a sample of the most creative and interesting media on our network. Sponsors get a dedicated share of attention, with the opportunity to gain thousands of new followers, likes, and reblogs.’

When it comes the ‘Spotlight’ feature, Tumblr team hand-picks the best content to showcase it through Spotlight. Now, however, sponsored content will get to be featured prominently. According to the Tumblr team, ‘The Tumblr Spotlight drives tens of millions of follows each week for new and existing users. Meticulously curated by our team of editors, it features a sample of the most talented creators on Tumblr. Sponsors are featured front-and-center.’

What is significant about Tumblr’s attempts to make some money is that it is doing so with style and without essentially ruining the overall user experience. The paid content will be embedded within the regular content rather seamlessly so that few of us may even notice. That is indeed a great thing. With monthly page views of 17.5 billion, it is only natural that folks at Tumblr think they can make handsome money out of this move.
