BitTorrent Testing New Monetization Techniques For Artists

BitTorrent Inc. has started testing new techniques to monetize from torrents, on July 24, 2012. The company has partnered with the legendary DJ Shadow who agreed to give away exclusive content to BitTorrent users. The free content, bundled with software from advertisers, will allow the artist as well as BitTorrent to generate revenue, if users install the attached software.

The Internet offers artists the opportunity to reach millions of audiences virtually without any cost. In fact, an artist can have enormous fans through this. Sharing free content like music, movies and books now-a-days has become one type of advertisement. An artist can not only become popular and grab attention but also he/she can generate some revenue from advertising (like YouTube). But BitTorrent was different. It was quite impossible to include ads, but now BitTorrent Inc. has changed its mind.

BitTorrent Inc. has announced that they are going to have a new series of experiments which will allow the artists to generate revenue from the work they share for free. It means, artists will be able to promote a bundle of free contents to 150 million BitTorrent users. This bundle includes a piece of sponsored software like media player, anti-virus etc from advertisers. When a user installs the free software, both the artist and BitTorrent will get a comission.

BitTorrent has started conducting the experiment from July 24 by releasing a bundle of exclusive content from Legendary DJ Shadow. You can download DJ Shadow’s uTorrent package from featuredcontent.utorrent.com.

In this approach, when users get their favorite or necessary things just for free, BitTorrent, as well as Artists, get lucrative revenue. The more users accessing to the free contents, the revenue generation chances of BitTorrent and artists widens. BitTorrent will use several ways to bring the featured content to the attention of both new and existing users. New users will get the option to download it when they install uTorrent client, and existing users will see banner and text ads promoting DJ Shadow’s bundle. Be noted, the package only includes a selection of tracks. People can download those absolutely free.

BitTorrent will roll out several campaigns this summer; and it will monitor the user response closely.
