After a lot of speculation and theories from different quarters, Google has confirmed the name of the next version of Android. According to Sundar Pichai, head of Android and Chrome, the next version is called Android KitKat.

Before this confirmation, the most widely held opinion was that the next version is going to be called Key Lime Pie. However, eventually Google realized that not many people know about the taste of Key Lime Pie. So it was changed to KitKat.

It must be noted here that Android KitKat is the confirmed name for Android 4.4, whereas the name of Android 5.0 continues to be unknown. When Google decided to go with the name KitKat, it reached out to Nestle who has copyrights of the brand of the same name.

Within 24 hours of the opening of this line of communications, Google and Nestle had reached an agreement, although it was revealed that this was not a ‘money-changing-hands kind of deal’ which essentially hints that no monetary offers were involved in it.

According to Google, “it’s our goal with Android KitKat to make an amazing Android experience available for everybody.” Sundar Pichai, while revealing the name of the new Android version, also remarked that he “can’t wait to release the next version of the platform that is as sweet as the candy bar that’s one of our team’s favorites.”
