The latest Modern Warfare game, released by Activision Blizzard under the Call of Duty franchise, broke all the sales records hitting the $ 1 million mark in just 16 days, and the first $400 million were gained after 24 hours after the release, according to the company statement. Former records for the previous mega selling entertainment products were Avatar and the latest Harry Potter movie, but both needed 17 days to reach to $1 billion.
Now, James Cameron’s commercial success with Titanic that needed three months to get $1 billion is now well behind and barely mention in this context. Modern Warefare 3’s predecessor, Call of Duty: Black Ops, managed to reach to the same level after two months.
Bobby Kotick, Activision Blizzard the company’s CEO, explained the success for the Guardian “Call of Duty is now amongst that rarified group of sustained franchises like Star Wars, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings and the National Football League that attract or engage tens of millions of people every year or every new release.”
The game, now part of the popular culture, illustrates a war between US and European forces against Russian ultranationalists in which the players have to fight as combatants. The main reason for the game’s success is the intricate use of special effects, some of them too advanced even for Hollywood. The Call of Duty franchise has now more than 30 million fans scattered around the world.
