Team DARwIn Wins RoboCup

Each year, a different type of soccer game is been held. It’s called “Robot Soccer World Cup“,widely known as “RoboCup.” In these soccer games, instead of professional soccer players like Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, only robots participate to play. The control of these robots are, however, in some people’s hands. This year the RoboCup was held from June 18 to June 23. And, this years champion is Team DARwIn.

At present EURO Cup 2012 is going on. But there was another Soccer Cup going on – RoboCup. The exciting 16th RoboCup was kicked off in Mexico City on June 18 and ended on June 23. This year, Team DARwIn won the RoboCup humanoid soccer league. Team DARwIn is a joint venture of Virginia Tech and U. Penn.

Team DARwIn’s joint-developed DARwIn OP beat CIT scoring 8-2 goals. Virginia Tech’s CHARLI-2 bot also won in the AdultSize soccer league, beating Japanese team Tsinghua Hephaestus by 3-0. Besides, using the brand new DARwIn XOS bot, Team DARwIn also competed in the TeenSize league this year, but they couldn’t do well. In fact, TeenSize league was dominated by Universität Bonn’s NimBro (Nick name “Albert”) bots, which beat CIT Brains by 6-3. Besides, the new NimBro also took the Louis Vuitton Humanoid Cup for Best Humanoid prize.
