Adobe Systems on Tuesday announced the release of the latest version of their consumer photo and video editing applications, Photoshop Elements 9 and Premiere Elements 9. The software targets digital photography enthusiasts, while steering clear of the complexity of professional-level software such as the company’s Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended. Both add Facebook posting from within the apps and new capabilities to their Windows versions, but the Premiere Elements video editor for the first time becomes available for Macs.

New for version 9 of Photoshop Elements are tools that apply effects like removing unwanted elements from images without distorting people and objects you want to keep, lomo photography, and fuller panoramas. The first makes use of Adobe’s “content aware” technology. Also added are output options like calendars, greeting cards, and photo books you can print at home or send out to pro processors. In addition to the Facebook sharing already mentioned, Adobe offers Flickr uploading an its own online sharing galleries, including some with animated templates. And the Photo Organizer companion app is now also available for Macintosh OS X.

For both software programs, there’s a improved organizer that lets users to tag and view photos and videos in one place, from where they can directly upload to Facebook and other online photo or print services. The Organizer also includes an interesting Auto-Analyzer feature, which identifies specific faces in photos and helps users tag what the program considers to be the best photos and videos in the bunch.

Premiere Elements 9 adds easy importing from Flip cameras and DSLRs and, according to Adobe, improved HD editing performance. Audio can now be optimized in the app, with things like background noise removal and volume mixing. New professional-looking cartoon effects can be applied, and new themes for menus, background music, and transitions are intended to give final productions consistency. Adobe also now offers online web-based DVD-like interfaces for use on Photoshop.com or private sites for video produced in Premiere Elements.

Photoshop Elements 9:

• Spot Healing Brush: analyzes image frame and repairs photos with a swipe of a brush, “magically filling in the background” (i.e. removing tourists the scene)
• Additional Guided Edit options: more step-by-step walkthroughs of editing effects such as Out of Bounds (3D-like effect), pop art, portraits, etc.

Premiere Elements 9:

• New intelligent tools that automatically fix audio problems, trim bad footage, correct bad color and lighting, and stabilize images
• Cartoon Effects: turns any video into an animated film
• Optimized editing and viewing
• Easier importing and uploading from Flip Video camcorders and DSLR cameras

The Adobe Plus service gives users cloud storage of their pictures and videos, up to 2GB for free or 20GB for a fee. The backup feature will automatically send files to the Plus storage space.Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 and Premiere Elements 9 have the same estimated street price of $99.99, or are available as a bundle including both for $149.99.The Photoshop Elements 9 trial is currently available in English, French, German, and Japanese for Microsoft® Windows® and Mac OS. Additional language versions for Windows will be available in mid-October.
