We have been hearing for the past few months that Samsung, Apple, Microsoft and Google are working on smartwatches. Although none have released any smartwatches yet, lately a rumor is swirling around that Google is all set to launch its smartwatch ‘within week.’
After the announcement of buying smartwatch maker WIMM in August of this which makes a watch that runs on Google’s Android software, Google inclined to make smartwatch like Galaxy Gear (Samsung), iWatch (Apple) or unnamed translucent aluminum smartwatch (Microsoft). We reported earlier that how a real smartwatch from Google may look like, but at that moment it was not specified when Google would unveil its smartwatch and what name it would give it. Thanks to blogger Artem Russakovskii who has shared the info on Google+ that Google’s smartwatch is called Nexus watch, codenamed Gem and it will be unveiled ‘within weeks.’
On the other side rumors say Gem will have the ability to use Google Now alerts for directions and text messages as the eyewear. The watch’s display will show calendar, alarms, emails, SMSes, etc. At present, Google is putting the finishing touches to Gem. There’s no doubt that the way smartwatches are getting popularity, the volume of smartwatch shipments will reach 5 million by 2014.
