Nook Color Getting Android 2.2

FroYo and apps like Angry Birds on the Barnes & Noble e-reader is possible but it’s not easy : If you install hack Froyo, the Nook recognizes it, but it’ll shut down immediately. Now Barnes & Noble confirms Android 2.2 FroYo update for Nook Color and coming to market in January……..

Barnes & Nook Color e-reader has made it into the headlines when the hacking community showed us that a comparatively cheaper Android Tablet is hiding behind this thin eBook Reader. We have even seen the Angry Birds running on it.The good folks at the hacking community have indeed told us how to get it rooted to have the Android Market and the stuff in the Android 2.2 running. Many who tried this hard way of getting the Froyo enabled in their Nook Color.

Enabling Froyo needed disabling the device’s normal battery monitoring processing. However, it is this normal battery monitoring that helps the Nook Color to find if the batteries are overheating and if so to prevent them from going to a critical stage. Many rooting and hacking guides for the Nook Color had a big banner warning for the less adventurous to wait till an easier way is developed. It came out at last, it seems. Barnes & Noble has recently confirmed the Nook Color will be getting the Android 2.2 treatment in January.

Thanks

    On December 15, 2010 you stated ”
Barnes & Noble has recently confirmed the Nook Color will be getting the Android 2.2 treatment in January.
Guess what? It is nearing mid February and it has not happened.

I was just at B&N Sunday, 2/6/11. The upgrade is expected late February to mid-March according the customer service rep.

Is this the truth or just rumor. I guess I could call BN and see.

Well, B&N are still talking but no action on the up-grade for the NC. Bought 2 in December with hopes of at least a calendar app to use. Guess I should have waited a longer but the sales person said in late December or early January, here it is in mid February and no show.

    Its alII

Its already march and no update WTF?

  12. Wzunino

I don’t know about you, but I feel like B&N lied to me about this. I wouldn’t have bought the thing if I knew it would be March and still no 2.2 update.

Why is B&N so market blind. They have an opportunity to take some serious tablet market by doing one little upgrade. Goodness knows the company can use the sales revenue to stay afloat. So what if it was designed as a reader, it’s a great little platform that can do more. I use it as a reader and as video player on long flights. This thing is far better than my iPhone for videos and a lot less money than the iPad.

    B&N – WAKE UP!!!!!

I’m pretty much giving them until the end of March before I sell the thing and buy the Xoom. I really like the NC, but I expected more than just an e-book when I purchased it. Between Samsung, Verizon and B&N, I have definately learned my lesson about B.S. system updates.

“but I expected more than just an e-book when I purchased it” — Seriously? It’s a book reader. That’s how B&N sells it, why would your expectations be higher than that? Yes, it’s great that the community worked hard and have made this little device do far more than intended, but that’s the point, B&N didn’t intend for it to happen, they just didn’t do a great job preventing it. Hence, you shouldn’t have ever had expectations that it would be more than that.

Now getting pissed at B&N because some tech blog posted a rumor and it’s been shown to be unfounded and false, that’s just a little over the top. Did B&N say it was going to get 2.2? Nope. So why are you upset at them? You should stop reading TTJ instead.

I am going to guess you don’t buy new technology devices often – most companies miss their target release dates and so if you are looking for a feature that is not currently available but promised then you should wait to buy it until AFTER the feature is available. It sucks but companies sometimes run into issues which push their release dates back. So, I bought a Nook Color two days ago and I couldn’t be happier! After rooting the device I now have Android Honeycomb working with the processor overclocked to 1.1 Ghz so it is incredibly fast. Playing flash based videos is currently an issue but I knew that ahead of time. An informed consumer is a happier consumer.

Shoot… I would have been happy if it would have at least been able to present .PDB files like the original Nook… I just wanted color and relied on the salesperson who represented to me (and others as he was handing out single sheet comparisons between the N.C. and other readers) that it could present the .PDB file format of DRM protected books.

This was posted on B&N Boards and Facebook today:

Hi all- If you’d like to get a sneak peek of some of the upcoming NOOK Apps, check out HSN this weekend to see them demonstrated. Then stay tuned! Everyone will receive the update as soon as it is ready this Spring.

    Here is HSN site:

the new update comes in April.

B&N would rather give its NC for free instead of releasing a major software upgrade. The best way to sell ebooks is by having dedicated eReaders…

  21. RO

Why the aitch pay HSN $80 more than buying directly from B&N?

Also, I do not see in the HSN ad (it IS just an extended sales pitch after all) that the “sneak peak” updates are anything other than apps – no hint of updating the base Android OS from 2.1 to 2.2 (FroYo).

As for the delays with releasing FroYo, I am suspecting B&N is looking at leapfrogging to Honeycomb (3.0) to have an “official” Google-supported tablet version, esp since the XDA crew has released 3.0 hacks (check them out if you are impatient – I am thinking it can load/run from an SD card so you do not have to risk the built-in stock installation, but check on that).

Actually the sales person at B&N told me that they would be getting 2.2. It was one of the reasons that I bought it. So……………

  23. Gemgemini

In the last HSN broadcast of the Nook Color, the hosts said, more than once that, the new tablet will get Android 2.2 and $200 worth of ebooks in the price.

  24. RO

OK. I was only looking at the website link from Lake45Lady’s post, and all I see there is mention of new apps to be added in April (“sneak peeks” for HSN). An OS upgrade is way more than an “app”.

I suppose the statements on the telecast were clear about a 2.2 upgrade, which has been expected for some months now, but did they say anything about it being so much sooner through HSN as to be worth $80 more than buying direct from B&N? Others have stated the free books “worth $200” are really just out-of-copyright classics that would be free anyway, which is about what I would expect of HSN. Did they mention any current books that actually cost something?

I would think B&N will send the update out OTA to all electronically registered NC’s regardless of which sales channel they went through whether HSN, BestBuy or their own stores. However, they probably will have to stagger those updates in waves to avoid overloading their servers/network since it would be likely to be in the 50-100MB range, so maybe HSN-sold NC’s get to be in the first wave (as a “sneak peek”) for $80 extra to beat the others by a few days? Any “guarantees”?

I have been considering a NC having gone through a number of other Android low- to mid-range tablets, but can certainly wait on Froyo a few extra days (weeks even) to save $80, but if you are confident that update and $200 worth of books are what you can get from HSN for that extra money, feel free – it’s your money ;-).

This is fantastic news, and a huge power play by B&N! I’ve been looking at a good android based tablet to buy for many months now (do NOT want one of those fruity ones).

Now with this announcement, the price range and feature set definitely put it up front and in the running to swing the balance in market share. They are satisfying the tablet cravings and putting one of the two top eReaders in the hands of consumers. Think they may just sell another eBook or two in the process??

Well done, and congrats on your win B&N!!
