Natural Gas Being Produced For Car From Fruit And Vegetable Waste

Did anyone ever imagine, cars will get natural gas produced from fruit and vegetable waste? Some people might say, I’m talking nonsense. But my friend, sometime truth is stranger than fiction. Researchers at Fraunhofer have developed a Pilot Plant that can make methane from fruit and vegetable wastage. This produced methane can be used to power vehicles. Sounds like, Strange! Lets find out.

Behind The Story Of Making Power Plant :
Due to raise of oil price, it’s becoming quite impossible for the people to drive the car. So, people are converting their oil-based car engine into natural gas-based car engine. But the fact it, natural gas is a fossil fuel which is limited reserved. Therefore, its price is also rising day by day. If both the price of oil and natural gas rise continuously, life will be stuck. So, Fraunhofer development was searching for an alternative way to obtain natural gas but not from Earth’s reserves at a cheap rate. Finally, after long equations and calculations they found, it is possible to produce natural gas from fruit and vegetable waste and they made Pilot Plant. Pilot Plant is part of the ETAMAX project and has been constructed adjacent to Stuttgart’s wholesale market.

Process Of Making Artificial Methane Gas :

The pilot plant will collect the fruit and vegetable waste. Most of them will be collected from Stuttgart’s wholesale market. The fruit and vegetable waste will be thrown in a tank accompanied by various microorganisms. In order to generate methane, the process will take more than two-stage digestion. To retain the microorganisms environmental conditions continuously and adjust the pH value, high proportion of acidic citrus fruits, cherries, plums, lettuce etc will be mixed while the process is running.

Dr.-Ing. Ursula Schließmann, head of department at the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology (IGB) said, “The waste contains a lot of water and has a very low lignocellulose content, so it’s highly suitable for rapid fermentation. We hold the waste in several storage tanks, where a number of parameters are automatically calculated – including the pH value. The specially designed management system determines exactly how many liters of waste from which containers should be mixed together and fed to the microorganisms“. For more, click here.

Hope so, people’s life will be easier and better. But, do you think, people will load their car with this artificial methane gas? Leave your comment below.
