Dirk B. – a founder of an illegal movie-streaming portal – Kino.to, has been convicted. Dirk B received a 4.5 year jail sentence and was ordered to forfeit $4.7m of the claimed $8m he earned from the site Kino.to.
In June 2011, for online movie piracy in Europe many people were arrested. The police in Germany, Spain, France, and the Netherlands suspected Kino.to where pirated movie could be found. Be noted, Kino.to was far better known in Germany than Megaupload. Their suspect for online movie piracy turned into reality and police arrested 39 year old Kino.to site’s founder Dirk B. and its affiliates.
The copyright infringement crimes related to his site allowed users to stream copyrighted movies illegally. Being said that, Dirk B. earned around $8 million from advertising on Kino.to. Dirk B. confessed to 1.1 million copyright breaches. The Leipzig court decided to send him to the jail for 11 years, but due to Dirk B.’s confession and apology, court ordered to send him jail for 4.5 years. In addition, court also ordered him to pay a $4.7 million fine. Dirk B. is the 6th person to be sentenced in the Kino.to case.
