Facebook has been expanding the scope of Facebook data and features which the app developers can make use of. For instance, the social network has announced that third-party apps will be able to make use of Facebook mentions from now on.
So hows exactly will this new feature work? Imagine a photo app that makes use of Open Graph. While using the app, you take a pic and want to tag any friend. If that friend has the Open Graph features set up, you will be able to tag him and he will receive a notification telling him about the tag. Moreover, the tag will also appear on his timeline.
This new feature is definitely great news for the developers. In a way, this is an extraordinary opportunity for free publicity. Naturally, when a friend tags another through an app, the latter would want to check out the app. And this way, apps can start getting more exposure and more users.
According to the official Facebook blog, “This new feature is ideal for situations when people are doing activities where they want to reference friends. For example, people want to mention friends when they share a special song, call a particular friend’s attention to a great movie or restaurant, or describe a photo that includes a friend.”
The feature will also enable apps to become more connected with the huge Facebook user base. Third-party app users will finally be able to get the same social experience as Facebook right on their apps.
