Nearly six months ago, Facebook made the ‘Graph search’ feature available to a limited number of its users. The search essentially allows users to make advanced searches quickly. After months of testing, Facebook has now started rolling out the feature to all U.S. users.
With the help of the feedback from millions of users, Facebook says that it has significantly improved the Graph search and the final version that is being offered to the users includes many improvements. Initially, the service will be made available on a large-scale to the U.S. users.
In a few weeks from now, all U.S. users will have access to the Graph search. According to the social network, “Over the past few months, tens of millions of people have helped improve the product just by using it and giving feedback.”
Apparently, the improvements include better accuracy and speed of providing results to complex search queries such as “Restuarants liked by my friends.” The feature, once it becomes available, is certainly going to be immensely helpful in discovering content from friends and contacts, within the context of Facebook.
However, the company is quick to point out that its entry into the arena of online search doesn’t pit it against the likes of Google or Bing. According to Facebook’s COO, Sheryl Sandberg, “Graph Search isn’t Web search. We aren’t duplicating what Bing does and what Google does, but rather we are making things easier for people to find on Facebook.”
The feature has also attracted privacy concerns since it makes content discovery very easy. Although only such content will appear in search results which has been made available by other users, many have cited concerns that the feature can be used by stalkers to keep a closer eye on others.
