The new beta 5 for Android and Maemo devices continues with the type of improvements we’ve seen in previous betas, granting even more speed boosts as well as greater stability.
Beta 4 is boasting faster page loading, improved JavaScript support, reduced memory usage, and support for add-ons that are currently making their debut in the desktop version of the Firefox 4 beta. Android-specific changes include several keyboard issues that have been improved because of the top feedback from Beta 3.
Features:
* Support for the new proposed Audio Data API
* Direct2D Hardware Acceleration is now on by default for Windows 7 users
* Firefox button has a new look for Windows Vista and Windows 7 users
* Firefox will now move its profile data to the SD card when you move the application to the SD card on Android 2.2 or higher.
* Support for HSTS security protocol allowing sites to insist that they only be loaded over SSL.
* As well as all the features from previous Firefox 4 Betas.
If you’re low on internal phone storage and want the app installed on an SD card, this beta now has better support for profiles, moving ones it’s saved along with the app when transferring it to a flash card.
While Mozilla didn’t give any specific figures, it asserts that it has been working on making sure that Firefox beta 5 takes up as little system memory as possible. Release notes suggest a 512MB minimum.
You can try out the latest beta 5 yourself with a phone running Android 2.0 or higher, as well as with Maemo on the Nokia N900.
