PonoPlayer, a high-fidelity portable music player, made countless headlines in the tech world when it launched on Kickstarter. The project has now passed the $5 million mark in Kickstarter pledges.
This is a huge achievement because such huge funds have been amassed only by the best of the best projects on Kickstarter. To give you a better understanding of how significant this is, PonoPlayer is the fourth most funded project on Kickstarter. And this, while there are still another 16 days to back it, means that we may see a significant boost in the project’s pledges by the time it’s deadline arrives.
When PonoPlayer was first unveiled in its Kickstarter project, many saw a promising device in it. The age of MP3 music players is gone but there is still a huge market out there for a music player which can deliver quality performance with a style. The PonoPlayer, supporting FLAC files and lossless audio, is able to deliver a significantly higher quality sound.
That is the key difference between a run-of-the-mill MP3 player and the PonoPlayer. But is that difference really worth $5 million? 12,000 Kickstarter backers seem to think so. The player comes with 128GB of storage space. With the kind of high-quality audio files that it will store, this storage will cover only 100 albums.
Once the product finally arrives, it will be very interesting to see what kind of users want to lay their hands on PonoPlayer. Some have speculated that only those who want to listen to an album over and over again, primarily musicians, would want it. But the fact that this product has 12000 Kickstarter backers means that its user demographics are far more rich, diverse and large.
