Facebook Overtakes Google As “Most Visited Website of the Year”

World’s largest social network, Facebook, has become the top most visited website in the year 2010, according to Hitwise. Facebook.com has now overtaken Google.com. Yahoo mail, Yahoo.com & Youtube are spotted as no 3, 4 & 5 consecutively. “Facebook” also ranked #1 for most searched term of the year directly in front of the hilarious “Facebook login” at #2. This is the first time Facebook has been named most visited site of the year.

Facebook.com was the top visited website in the US in 2010, taking up 8.93% of site visits between January and November 2010. Google.com came in second at 7.19%, Yahoo Mail is third with 3.52% and Yahoo.com is fourth at 3.30%. YouTube came in fifth at 2.65 %.

Comscore also shows Facebook.com passing Google.com in visits in November but all Google sites as still having more. According to Hitwise, visits to Google properties combined cover 9.85% of all site visits, making Google a formidable opponent.

A part of Experian Marketing Services, has analyzed the top 1000 search terms for 20101 and Facebook was the top-searched term overall. This is the second year that the social networking website has been the top search term overall, accounting for 2.11 percent of all searches.1 Four variations of the term “facebook” were among the top 10 terms and accounted for 3.48 percent of searches overall.

The term “facebook login” moved up from the 9th spot in 2009 to the second spot in 2010. YouTube was the third most-searched term in 2010, followed by craigslist, myspace and facebook.com. Analysis of the search terms revealed that social networking-related terms dominated the results, accounting for 4.18 percent of the top 50 searches.

When combined, common search terms – e.g., facebook and facebook.com – for Facebook accounted for 3.48 percent of all searches in the US among the top 50 terms, which represents a 207 percent increase versus 2009. YouTube terms accounted for 1.12 percent, representing a 106 percent increase versus 2009. Aol search terms accounted for 0.34 percent of searches in 2010, but grew 22 percent versus 2009. Google terms accounted for 0.63 percent, and Craigslist terms accounted for 0.62 percent.

New terms that entered into the top 50 search terms for 2010 included – netflix, verizon wireless, espn, chase, pogo, tagged, wells fargo, yellow pages, poptropica, games and hulu.

KDE has launched a Partner Network for its Vivaldi tablet, the first ever KDE powered tablet. The Vivaldi tablet is a 7-inch tablet which will run on Mer Linux or KDE Plasma Active with an ARM-based processor. This tablet will be shipped from the next month for around €200 (~$314.74). The company did not announce the US price yet. Unfortunately, the company does not accept the pre-orders at this time.
