PrimeSense is the 3D sensoring company that furnished a significant portion of the tech that went into making Microsoft’s Kinect. The company has now reportedly been acquired by Apple for a cool $345 million.
Although the deal is in the works, reports have it that a temporary legal glitch has halted it. However, both Apple and PrimeSense plan to see it through.
PrimeSense had recently raised $85 million from U.S. and Israeli venture capital funds. The company is hailed as a pioneer in the 3D sensory technology and the sensing technology from PrimeSense is used to give Xbox Kinect the ability to discern 3D motions.
When asked about the reported acquisition, a PrimeSense spokesperson said, “We are focused on building a prosperous company while bringing 3D sensing and natural interaction to the mass market in a variety of markets such as interactive living room and mobile devices. We do not comment on what any of our partners, customers or potential customers are doing and we do not relate to rumors or recycled rumors.”
If the reported acquisition turns out to be true in the coming days, it may mean that Apple is planning to use the 3D sensory technology some time in the future. The company may pack the technology in its smartphones and tablets as a next-generation feature. Although smartphone vendors have tried their hands at 3D sensing technology in the past, most of these initiatives have met mild success at best.
