Wall Street Journal recently interviewed Facebook’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg. During the interview, Mark was asked a very significant question that which companies did he admire. Mark responded that he liked Amazon, Google and Apple. However, Mark made no mention of Facebook despite the fact that Facebook and Microsoft are partners in a lot of ventures. Mark admired Google and Apple for various reasons. He also found the persistence of Amazon’s CEO to be amazing. Although the relations between Facebook and Google and Apple are not very cordial, it’s interesting to note that Mark admires these companies. Following are the exact questions put to him and his answers:
WSJ: What companies do you admire?
Zuckerberg: Amazon is a great recent example of focusing on the long term and accepting shorter margins on the short term. [Amazon CEO] Jeff [Bezos] went through years of people thinking he’s crazy. Apple is amazing in terms of the quality of stuff that they do. And Google, too, for the same thing.
WSJ: Do you place Facebook in the same category as those businesses?
Mr. Zuckerberg: I hope one day we will be. We’re a lot younger than all of them and still quite a bit smaller in terms of size of employees. Because we focused so much over the past five or six years on building things that are going to have lasting value for people, I think we have a good shot at that.
Facebook is trying to forge better relations with Apple now. However, relations between Google and Facebook are strained and both are in the competitors arena ever since the launch of Google Plus. Let’s see how Mark’s choices are influenced with the future of Facebook.
