Google Claims Android Has 700,000 Apps Now, Equals Apple’s App Store

Apple’s app store has long been touted as the largest app store for any platform. And the company has frequently cited that as a major strength it has over competitors. However, Google Play now has around 700,000 apps available. That means, now Apple has to share the crown with Google.

Only very recently, Apple had claimed that its iTunes App Store passed 700,000 apps. The metric was revealed during the launch of iPhone 5 and was naturally meant to tell the prospective users that they are moving into a valuable app ecosystem shall they purchase the device.

Indeed, a year ago or so, the decisive factor in buying an iPhone was often the fact that Apple’s App Store had the best and most apps than anyone else in the world. However, the scales seem to be tilting in favor of Google now.

Google has now revealed that as of now, there are about 700,000 apps available for Android devices. What is really significant here is the fact that merely a month ago, Google was 25,000 apps short of that number. So the company has really pushed the ante and is putting in a serious effort to compete with Apple on equal terms.

With 700,000 apps available for Android too, Apple has lost the huge advantage it once had due to its app ecosystem. That is as far as the numbers go. Apple still has an advantage over Android apps in that the security and quality of the apps in App Store are far better than Google Play.

The latter has often been criticized for lacking sufficient security and having a high level of malware. So although Google has levelled the contest in terms of numbers, it needs to strive more to improve the quality and security of Android apps.

quality, security…. I never got malware on my android yet, and I download tons of apps…

I think the repeating news we’re getting might be over publicized spin paid for by Apple…

I do have an iPhone… The same apps are the same, regardless of which phone I loaded them on, except on Android, I get widgets with them, which I love.
