Google Maps 5.0 For Android

Google announce Google Maps 5.0 for Android with two significant new features: 3D interaction and offline reliability. The new version of Google Maps uses vector graphics which allows it to display 3D maps, including 3D buildings for more than 100 in the world……….

Google Maps 5.0 will be released in a matter of days and Android users should be able to download it free at that point.Google Maps 5.0 for Android marks a significant change to the basic technology of Google Maps.Google is now using vector graphics for its maps which are scalable and much lighter weight than the traditional stitched together images used in most Google Maps incarnations.3D buildings are visible at street-level view which lets you tilt the image and check out your virtual surroundings. The map will also adjust as you move dictated by the compass, or you can rotate the map yourself if you want to check out various views.

Google Maps 5.0 also included in the update is an offline mode that will remember areas you’ve visit the most and cache those maps in the background.Maps downloads and caches data from your most frequently visited areas overnight when you connect Wi-Fi and 3D building models and zooming down 2-3 layers in the map after the phone was switched to offline mode.

The minimum requirements for the new Maps will let it run on any phone running Android 1.6 Donut, but features such as the dynamic rendering and map rotation will only work on more advanced hardware.Basically, it’s gotta be as powerful as the original Motorola Droid, though YMMV. It’s a pretty incredible experience, and we can only hope it shows up on other non-Android phones with Google Maps sooner instead of later.
