The niche market of 7-inch tablet had been unexplored until Amazon released Kindle Fire and it took the world by quite a storm, at least for a few weeks after it’s release. It’s overall sales too could be bested only by Apple. This success made all tablet vendors realize that 7-inch tablet market is a lucrative and no less important avenue. So while we had earlier heard that Apple is working on a similar sized tablet, we now have been told by analysts from Display Search that Google is also in the process of developing a 7-inch tablet.
According to the analysts at DisplaySearch, Google may introduce a 7-inch tablet by the end of this year. This 7-inch tablet will have a display resolution of 1280 x 800, which will put it’s display well ahead of that being offered by the current model of Kindle Fire with a resolution of 1024 x 600.
Initially, the analysts say, Google has plans of producing 1.5 to 2 million units at the time of the launch. Further plans regarding the production volume will of course depend on how the users respond to it. Another significant thing about this rumored tablet is that it is said to run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. From the rumors, one could say that this paints a fine picture of the tablet – with superior hardware specs and latest Android OS, it could bring Google into the limelight of 7-inch tablet market.
The price of the tablet, again based on a mere rumor, is said to be $199, putting it at par with Kindle Fire’s tablet. However, what remains unclear is that why would Google go for a new tablet when it already will be in possession of Motorola’s multiple tablets after the planned acquisition of the company. Perhaps the analysts at Google see a bright future for the 7-inch tablet market and want to be a part of it.
