US government has been doggedly pursuing the case against Megaupload’s founder, Kim Dotcom, and other members of the Megaupload team. So far, the government hasn’t been able to get a positive response on the whole extradition demand. In fact, the extradition hearing has been delayed until March 2013, which pretty much means a temporary failure for the US government.
However, Kim Dotcom has now come up with a remarkable offer for the US government. Kim wants his funds unfrozen so that he can pay his legal team. Also, he wants a fair trial on his case. In exchange for all this, he and his team would voluntarily go to US rather than the US government having to pursue the case for months to have them extradited.
The reason Dotcom is offering this is because, according to him, the US government has frozen all his funds. At the same time, in fighting his case, he is incurring huge expenses none of which he has paid so far.
According to him, “I have accumulated millions of dollars in legal bills and I haven’t been able to pay a single cent. They just want to hang me out to dry and wait until there is no support left.”
That pretty much seems to be the strategy of US government. In fact, whereas the recent delay in the whole extradition thing means a temporary failure for US, it also means that until that time, Dotcom and his team will incur more humongous legal expenses. And thus, to avoid that, Dotcom wants to settle things once and for all.
He tweeted from his Twitter account, “Hey DOJ, we will go to the US. No need for extradition. We want bail, funds unfrozen for lawyers & living expenses.” But he isn’t very hopeful that DoJ will respond positively. According to him, “They will never agree to this and that is because they can’t win this case and they know that already.”
