Google Playing Evil With Acer Over Android

Taiwanese manufacturer of phones and PCs, Acer, planned to hold a joint press conference with China-based Alibaba Group in Shanghai on September 13, Thursday to debut CloudMobile A800, a smartphone which runs on Aliyun operating system developed by Alibaba. But the press conference was canceled before it started. Why the press conference cancelled? To answer the question Alibaba replied that Google threatened to pull its Android support from Acer if Acer pursued Alibaba’s Aliyun operating system. Interesting thing is Acer did not confirm the claim.

Cancellation Of Acer's Press Conference

Acer is the third vendor to adopt Aliyun for smartphones. The company planned to debut its smartphone – CloudMobile A800, which has a Qualcomm S4 MSM8260A 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 4.3 inch 1280 x 720 pixel touch screen, 1GB RAM and 8GB ROM. Its price was 2,999 yuan (US$473). The phone would run on Alibaba’s Aliyun OS. The press conference was supposed to held on September 13. But it was cancelled on that day.

According to Alibaba’s speech, the reason behind the cancellation was that Google informed Acer that the company (Google) would like to cancel cooperation with Acer on development of Android smartphones and related licensing if Acer launches Aliyun-based smartphones.

As Acer cancelled the joint press conference, it means that the company gave priority to Google and it need Google’s cooperation for further assistance to develop Android smartphones.

The interesting thing is market watchers became surprise of Google’s such behavior and they could not understand Google’s such pressure upon Acer to back out.
