RIM Buys NewBay

Research In Motion has agreed to acquire NewBay Software for about $100 million and the company confirmed that they have a cut a deal for NewBay, but declined to talk about the price, which the story attributes to sources close to the company. It’s clear that RIM has a decent vision and setup for certain aspects of the smartphone war and it’s apparent that RIM’s move to purchase NewBay has to do with creating a cloud-based BlackBerry content service to rival that of Apple’s iCloud and Amazon’s Cloud Drive……………..

YouTube Brings Movie Rental To UK

UK users are waking up to a ton of new content courtesy of Google and the YouTube rental service previously only available in the U.S. and Canada. With over 1,000 titles to choose from, the service will offer 48 hour retails ranging from £2.49 to £3.49 and it’s of course available via the Movies link in the upper right of YouTube, but is also accessible through Google TV, Android tablets and certain smartphones running Honeycomb, which in short, Google has been building its movie ambitions incrementally……………………

The Youtube account that will be streaming the upcoming Samsung/Google event on October 12th has accidentally slipped with posting the stream already and the title confirms that Ice Cream Sandwich launches October 12th.A funny thing happened to the folks at Android Police, the same group responsible for leaking some of the first screenshots of Ice Cream Sandwich and they’ve since come across a few apps from Google’s upcoming release. The Google Plus app found on the Verizon Ice Cream Sandwich device, which marked as v2.0 and contains numerous UI changes from the v1.0.x that is in the Market right now…………….

Android Extends Lead Over Apple

Android has taken a more commanding lead over iOS in the U.S., research firm ComScore is reporting and Android secured 43.7 percent of the U.S. smartphone OS market during the three-month period ended August 2011, jumping 5.6 percentage points from the 38.1 percent market share it had at the end of May. Apple’s iOS platform came in second place with 27.3 percent market share at the end of August and in the three-month period ended May, Apple’s operating system secured 26.6 percent of the U.S. smartphone OS market. Apple is now further ahead of RIM by 7.6 points, a gap that’s been steadily widening as the BlackBerry maker continues to lose market share, mostly attributed to its customers converting to Android devices and when it comes to smartphone manufacturers, Samsung and Apple are the only two seeing more consistent growth over the last few months……………..
